Klein Scarf

Please note: this pattern is now available to download as a pdf from Craftsy for $2. It will still be freely available on this blog, but I thought people might want the opportunity to download a pdf version.

Here's another geeky one.This pattern is made up algorithmically, it's a repeating pattern of 4 stitches x 4 stitches with knits and purls randomly assigned. I really like the way the pattern turned out, makes a good manly scarf. If you like it please check out my random tea cosy design too!

Yarn 3 balls (=372 m = 150 g) Rowan Pure Wool dk.

Needles One pair 4.5 mm/ US 7 needles.

Gauge 22st = 10cm in stocking stitch with 4mm/US 6 needles

Dimensions 5'' x 80''

Notation
k = knit
p = purl
CO = cast on

Directions

Random Pattern
Row 1: *p2, k2* to end of row
Row 2: p1, * k1, p3* until last 3 stitches, k1 p2
Row 3: k1, *p2, k2* to last 3 stitches, p2 k1
Row 4:*k1, p1* to end of row

CO 32 stitches. Work in pattern until scarf measures 80'' or desired length, bind off.

  1. I tried the "random stich" part of this pattern for an infinity and love it. I used (2)Patons Shetland Chunky tweed yarn, number 9 needles, and cast on 96 stitches. (You might want to make it a little larger?) The tweed looks great with the pattern. I admit I only looked at the pattern because my maiden name is Klein, but it was a great find!

    1. Is there a matching hat to knit with this? I would like to make a set. I completed the scarf, just need a matching hat pattern. Any suggestions?

    2. Hi, I'm really sorry but there isn't. You could just take a plain hat pattern for the same gauge and work it in this pattern though!

  3. I'm not, but when I get some time and a camera, I'll give it a try. Thanks again for the idea/algorithm.

  4. I did put my infinity on Ravelry today. I am bmwalker, and called the project Klein Infinity. It looks like taking good pics is a learned skill, but you will get the general idea.

    1. Hi, I think the best think to do is to search for videos on youtube showing you how to bind off. I could write down instructions but they'd be much harder to follow! I would just search for something like "how to bind off, knitting" in youtube. Hope that helps, if you can't find anything on youtube please do get back to me!

    3. Hi again Melissa!
      You knot the two ends together, thread each end onto a darning needle, and just weave it in and out of the knitting down the edge of the scarf, trying to make it as well hidden as possible. You can trim off any little ends at that stage.

  7. Hi I loved your pattern so I tried it out but I missed a row and thinking it was the row I missed I ended up knitting a wrong row next. Now the entire pattern has started changing. I don't even know the point at which I had missed the row. Can plz help me?

    1. Hey, thanks for your question. Yes, if you send me a clear photo of the bit where it starts to go wrong I'll see what I can do! Thanks!

    2. Hi, thanks for the suggestion but I already restarted. I'll keep it in mind in case it happens again. I keep restarting I either miss rows or forget which row I was knitting but I don't give up coz I love your scarf design and hopefully will have one of mine. Btw loved your other designs too. :-)

    4. I (finally) completed this scarf in dark red. I had the same problem about losing track of which row I was on. I had 30" done before I originally set it aside to work on a different scarf for my grandson. When I picked it back up I kept veering off and found myself ripping out 2 to 3 inches whenever that happened (3 or 4 times - shuddering!) - but NEVER back to the beginning. :D My final length is 80". I edged it in same color pearl cotton, reverse single crochet. That's my favorite finishing. It took a little more than 2 years to complete.

    2. Hi,

      I'm following the repeating pattern of the 4 rows, but somehow the patter as in the picture is not emerging. It just looks like nothing really. Not sure what I am doing wrong.

    3. Hi, sorry to hear that. If you email me a picture of it (d.j.winn "at" hotmail.co.uk) then I'll see if I can spot what's going wrong!

  9. Love your pattern. Wrote it down on an index card and found a red paper clip in my desk. Now I simply move the paper clip to each row. I never forget where I am and can pick up my knitting at any time and continue knitting. My husband will really like it. Thanks ever so much.

  11. Thank you so much for offering this free pattern. The *only* reason I copy it from here instead of getting the PDF is that I like to be able to add comments to myself in the pattern. Also love the idea LindaR put about keeping track of the rows.

  12. I'm new to knitting so these questions might be silly but is the pattern calling for double knitting? or is that just the type of yarn? also, after the 4th line I'm assuming you just repeat the pattern. Thanks!!
